SageBizet vs Toast

Toast is a restaurant platform: its own hardware, card processing and a long list of add-ons. SageBizet is software only: it runs in a browser on the devices you have and leaves the card machine to you.

Toast is the better choice for a busy restaurant in a country Toast serves that wants card processing, restaurant hardware, online ordering with delivery, payroll and several locations from one company; SageBizet is the better choice for a single café, restaurant or bar that wants a browser-based POS with kitchen screens, recipes, a QR menu, the cash drawer, expenses and customer tabs, free during early access and on devices it already owns.

The short answer

Choose Toast if you run a busy full-service or quick-service restaurant in the US, Canada, the UK, Ireland or Australia and want card payments, restaurant-grade terminals and handhelds, kiosks, online ordering with delivery, payroll, gift cards and several locations from one company, with 24/7 phone support, and you are comfortable with processing fees and a signed agreement. Choose SageBizet if you run one café, restaurant or bar, already have a card terminal or mobile-money service (or mostly take cash), work outside Toast’s countries, or want the till, kitchen screens, recipes and food cost, a QR menu, the cash drawer, expenses and customer tabs without buying hardware or paying monthly fees during early access.

Where each one is stronger

If the other product fits your business better, it should win — this is where.

Toast is the better choice when you need

  • Card payments are built in, including payments taken at the table on a handheld and online, so takings and orders reconcile in one system.
  • Toast makes restaurant-grade hardware — terminals, handhelds, kiosks, kitchen displays, guest displays and card readers — and drives kitchen printers; SageBizet’s kitchen screens are browser pages and it does not drive printers.
  • Online ordering with online payment, its own delivery service, a branded app and Grubhub, Uber Eats and DoorDash integrations; SageBizet has no delivery-app integration and does not take payment online.
  • Payroll, scheduling, tips management, gift cards and email marketing are available from the same company; SageBizet has none of these for cafés and restaurants.
  • Built for multi-location groups, with multi-location management; SageBizet’s café and restaurant module covers one location.
  • Support around the clock by phone or web messaging, and a directory of third-party integrations.

SageBizet is the better choice when you need

  • Every feature is free during early access, with no hardware to buy, no per-device fees and no processing fees charged by SageBizet, because it does not process payments.
  • Runs in a browser on the computers, tablets and phones you already own; Toast’s software works only on Toast-approved devices.
  • Works in any country, currency and timezone, with whatever card terminal or mobile-money service you already use.
  • Recipes, food cost %, suppliers, purchase orders, waste, stock counts, a QR menu, the cash drawer with over/short at close, expenses with net profit and customer credit tabs are all in the same account.
  • Café insights are built from your own records: menu engineering, food cost by week, waste, ticket times and signals such as a supplier price rise or regulars who stopped coming.

The main difference: a restaurant platform or software on your own devices

Toast is a complete restaurant platform: it sells its own hardware, processes card payments as a payment facilitator, and adds products for online ordering, delivery, reservations, payroll, marketing and inventory, priced by plan, by device and by quote. SageBizet is software in a browser: it runs the till, the kitchen screens, the floor, recipes and stock, but it does not take card payments or sell hardware. You record each sale as cash, card, mobile money, other or on a customer’s tab, and take the card on whatever terminal you already have.

Who should choose Toast

  • You run a busy full-service or quick-service restaurant and want staff to take orders and payments at the table on handhelds.
  • You want online ordering with online payment, your own delivery, a branded app or orders from Grubhub, Uber Eats and DoorDash in the POS.
  • You need payroll, scheduling, gift cards, email marketing or several locations managed together.
  • You want kitchen printers, kiosks and guest displays from the same supplier as the POS, with 24/7 phone support.
  • Your restaurant is in the US, Canada, the UK, Ireland or Australia.

Who should choose SageBizet

  • You run one café, restaurant or bar and want a till, bar and kitchen screens on tablets, a floor plan and split checks without buying hardware.
  • You already have a card terminal or mobile-money service, or most of your sales are cash, and do not want processing tied to your POS.
  • You want recipes, food cost and inventory, the cash drawer, expenses and customer tabs in one place without monthly fees during early access.
  • Your business is outside the countries Toast serves, or needs a currency Toast does not support.

Switching from Toast

Toast hardware runs only Toast software, so plan on a computer, tablet or phone with a modern browser for the till and a tablet for each kitchen or bar station, plus your own card terminal. Check the end date and terms of your Toast agreement first. There is no import tool from Toast: set up the menu in SageBizet with categories, stations, options and prices, add recipes if you want food cost, then lay out the floor and start selling. Common questions

Is SageBizet a free alternative to Toast?
SageBizet is free during early access, with every feature included, no hardware to buy and no per-device fees. Unlike Toast, it does not process card payments, so you take cards on your own terminal and pay that provider’s fees separately.
How much does Toast cost?
As of October 2026, Toast’s published US starting prices are $0 a month for an eligible Starter Kit, $69 a month for the Point of Sale plan and custom pricing for Build Your Own. Card processing fees, extra devices and add-ons cost more, and the Starter Kit’s Pay-as-you-Go option carries a platform fee on each transaction and a 2-year agreement.
Can I run Toast or SageBizet on my own tablet?
Toast says its services work only on devices Toast has approved, so it runs on Toast hardware. SageBizet runs in any modern browser on a computer, tablet or phone and can be installed as a web app, so a laptop or an existing tablet can be the till or a kitchen screen.
Which countries is Toast available in?
Toast lists sites for the US, Canada, the UK, Ireland and Australia. SageBizet works in any country, currency and timezone because it does not process payments.
Does SageBizet have a kitchen display like Toast?
Yes, as browser pages: each bar or kitchen station gets a screen on a tablet with tickets oldest first, timers that turn amber then red, ready and recall, and a pickup board for guests. SageBizet does not sell display hardware or drive kitchen printers, and the screens refresh every few seconds.
Do Toast and SageBizet work offline?
Both keep taking orders when the internet drops. Toast can also take card payments offline, but declined or expired offline payments are the restaurant’s risk, and online ordering, gift cards and loyalty stop until it reconnects. SageBizet keeps the menu on the device and syncs sales when the connection returns, never recording one twice.
